Reported Crime Figures for August 2006

Tollcross, Lothian Road, Fountainbridge, Bruntsfield and Grassmarket

A total of 58 crimes or offences were recorded in the month of August for the Fountainbridge area.

Two vehicles were broken into, or had property stolen from them.
Attempts were made to steal two other vehicles in August.

There were 8 assaults reported during August, two of which were solved.

In relation to domestic housebreakings, there were NO such reports this month.
A total of 281 crimes or offences were recorded in the month of August for the Tollcross area.

As in previous months a large number of crimes are Thefts from within licensed premises and business premises with persons leaving property unattended. Mobile phones are a favoured item, with 34 stolen.

There were 59 reports of assault, of which 21 were solved.

There were 7 domestic housebreakings and 3 business housebreakings reported during August.

There were also NO business housebreakings this month.
There were 7 Domestic housebreakings in August.
They occurred at Tarvit Street, Reigo Street (2), and four rooms at the Point Hotel in Bread Street.
Jewellery, cash, mobile phone, Ipod, and bank cards were amongst the items stolen.
A male has been charged with the break-ins at the Point Hotel.
The 3 Business break-ins occurred at Greyfriars Kirkhouse and two in the Grassmarket.
A large quantity of knitwear was stolen from a shop in the Grassmarket.

Toyota: Lauriston Gardens,
Ford: Castle Terrace,
Nissan: George Square Lane.

A computer, mobile phone, camera and clothing were some of the items stolen.

Attempts were made to steal a Ford Fiesta from Dundee Terrace and another vehicle from Gibson Terrace. There were 3 vehicles stolen in August.
A green Rover was stolen from Melville Drive.
A Honda motorcycle was stolen from Johnston Terrace.
Another Honda motorcycle was stolen from Buccleuch Place and recovered a short time later in Dumbiedykes Road. A 19 year old male was arrested in connection with the latter.
An attempt was also made to steal a Rover Metro in Buccleuch Place.

There were NO pedal cycles reported stolen in August. There were 3 in total, these occurring at George Square, Lauriston Place and George IV Bridge.
All had been left secured and had the security chains cut.

Racially Motivated Crime Racially Motivated Crime
There were two racial incidents this month.

A 32 year old English male was subjected to verbal racial abuse by a 22 year old Scottish male. Insufficient evidence to charge.

Staff at Khyber Stores, 60 Lochrin Buildings were subjected to verbal abuse by an 18 year old male who had been responsible for similar incidents in the past.
A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for 2 racial Breaches of the Peace and 2 breaches of bail conditions
There were six racial incidents this month.

A 25 year old Indian male was subjected to verbal racial abuse by a 41 year old female in Bruntsfield Place. She has been charged and a report sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A 28 year old male in Bristo Place was subjected to verbal anti-Semitic abuse by a 41 year old white male. He was arrested and charged and a report sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A 41 year old Afro-Caribbean doorman on duty in the West Port was racial abused by a 32 year old Asian male. He was charged and a report sent to Procurator Fiscal.

A 25 year old Pakistani male in Lauriston Place was subjected to verbal racial abuse by a white male in his 40’s.
Enquiries are continuing to identify and trace this male.

A 30 year old female student was racial abused by a 30 year old white male. He was arrested and charged. A report was sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A 21 year old Asian female was verbally abused by a 30 year old white female with the Espionage, Victoria Street. All enquiries to trace the culprit have proved negative.
