Reported Crime Figures for June 2006

Tollcross, Lothian Road, Fountainbridge, Bruntsfield and Grassmarket

A total of 71 crimes or offences were recorded in the month of June for the Fountainbridge area.

Two vehicles were broken into, or had property stolen from them.
There were no vehicles stolen during June.

There were 12 assaults reported during June, seven of which were solved.

In relation to domestic housebreakings, there were two such reports this month.
A total of 213 crimes or offences were recorded in the month of June for the Tollcross area.

As in previous months a large number of crimes are Thefts from within licensed premises and business premises with persons leaving property unattended. Mobile phones are a favoured item, with 16 stolen.

There were 47 reports of assault, of which 21 were solved.

There were 7 domestic housebreakings and 6 business housebreakings reported during June.

There were 2 domestic housebreakings reported during June.
A ground floor flat in Murdoch Terrace was entered by bodily pressure on front door.
A computer, MP3 player, camera and necklace were stolen.
A rear ground floor flat in Watson Crescent was entered by climbing through insecure window.
A TV, mobile phone and cash were stolen.
A male was arrested and charged in relation to this break-in.
There were two business housebreakings reported.
A shop premises in Home Street was broken into and a room at the Bruntsfield Hotel was entered.
A local male has been charged with the hotel break-in.
There were 7 Domestic housebreakings in June.
They occurred at Lauriston Terrace, Ramsay Garden, Warrender Park Crescent, Kings Stables Road, Lawnmarket (2), and Lauriston Park. Computers, cash, DVD player, CD’s and jewellery were amongst the items stolen.

A male has been charged with the break-ins at Ramsay Garden.

The 6 Business break-ins occurred at Brougham Street, Grindlay Street, Teviot Place, Cowgatehead, Brougham Place, and Hope Park Square.

An MP3 player, clothing and cash were some of the items stolen.

A green Ford Mondeo was stolen from Kings Stables Lane.
An attempt was also made to steal a blue BMW from Barclay Place.

There were two pedal cycles reported stolen in June.
(Lower Gilmore Bank and Viewforth Square).
Both had been left secured.
There were 5 in total, these occurring at Bread Street, Johnston Terrace, Grassmarket, Bruntsfield Links, and Bristo Square. The last two had been left insecure.

Racially Motivated Crime Racially Motivated Crime
A 52 year old male Turkish kebab shop owner was subjected to verbal racial abuse in Fountainbridge. A 34 year old white male was arrested and charged, and report sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A 26 year old male Indian student was subjected to verbal racial abuse in a stair a Viewforth by two white males in their early 20’s. Enquiries are continuing to the suspects.

An 18 year old male Pakistani student was verbally abused in Dundee Street by a white male in his mid 20’s. Enquiring are being made to trace the culprit.
A 25 year old Pakistani male was subjected to verbal racial abuse in Lothian Road. A 30 year old male is to be traced and cautioned and charged.

A 19 year old male of African origin was subjected to racial abuse in the Meadows Public Park by a 19 year old white female. A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Three Indian males aged 22, 23 and 31 were subjected to verbal racial abuse in the Lawnmarket by two white males. Enquiries are continuing to trace the suspects.

A 28 year old Pakistani shopkeeper in Lothian Road was subjected to verbal racial abuse by a male only known as ‘Steve’.
Enquiries on going to trace him.
