Reported Crime Figures for March 2006

Tollcross, Lothian Road, Fountainbridge, Bruntsfield and Grassmarket

A total of 71 crimes or offences were recorded in the month of March for the Fountainbridge area.

Seven vehicles were broken into, and one vehicle was stolen during March.

There were 14 assaults reported during March, four of which were solved.

In relation to domestic housebreakings, there were three such report this month.

A total of 242 crimes or offences were recorded in the month of March for the Tollcross area.

As in previous months a large number of crimes are Thefts from within licensed premises and business premises with persons leaving property unattended. Mobile phones are a favoured item, with 16 stolen.

There were 56 reports of assault, of which 23 were solved.

There were 5 domestic housebreakings and 6 business housebreaking reported during March.

There were 3 domestic housebreakings reported during March. Flats in Yeaman Place and Lochrin Buildings, and a main door house in Gilmore Place were entered. DVD’s were stolen from all three properties.
A Chinese restaurant in Bruntsfield Place was broken into and a TV stolen.
A hut at the rear of Yeaman Place was broken into, nothing was stolen.
The 5 Domestic housebreakings occurred at George IV Bridge, Forrest Road, Lauriston Place, Kings Stables Road and Spittal Street.

The 6 Business break-ins occurred at Lawnmarket (3), Castle Terrace (2) and Lauriston Place.

There was one vehicle stolen during March.

A red Ford Fiesta was stolen from Gibson Terrace.
There were two vehicles stolen in February.

A silver Kawasaki ZX600 was stolen from Lauriston Gardens.
A white Vauxhall Combo van was stolen from Johnston Terrace.

There were two pedal cycles reported stolen in March.
(Gillespie Street and Leamington Terrace).
Both had the security chain cut.
There were 5 in total, these occurring at Lauriston Street, Grassmarket, High Riggs (2), and Panmure Place.

Racially Motivated Crime Racially Motivated Crime
At 40 Watson Crescent, a handwritten note was pinned to the back of the common stair door. The note had remarks of a racist and threatening nature.
Enquiries are continuing.
There were four racial crimes reported during March.

A 29 year old Afro-Caribbean male was subjected to verbal racial abuse by a 54 year old white male in Johnston Terrace. He has been charged and report sent to Procurator Fiscal.

A 20 year old Asian male was Racial abused in Victoria Street by a white male in his early 20’s. Enquiries are continuing.

A 44 year old female Chinese police officer was subjected to racial abuse in the Grassmarket Bar. A 35 year old white male was arrested and charged.
Report sent to Procurator Fiscal.

A 25 year old male shopkeeper in Forrest Road was subjected to verbal racial abuse by a 21 year old white male. The culprit was charged and a report sent to Procurator Fiscal.
